David Delruelle, a Belgian collage artist invited me to take part in the World Wide Blog Hop by answering 4 questions about my artwork and then inviting 3 other artists to do the same. Thank you, David!
1. What am I working on? Currently I’m working on a series of large hand-cut collages for a group show happening later this summer. I’m also playing about with ideas for some design projects; including branding and identity for a new club and some album sleeves for a few bands I like.
2. How does my work differ from others of its genre? Collage is such an interesting form of expression, using second hand imagery to create something new really challenges the idea of originality. I’ve tried to develop a visual style and language that’s my own and I think that whether I am working with digital or analogue techniques, this identity is evident. At the same time, my style is always changing and developing, influenced by the discovery of new techniques and new materials. A lot of the projects I’ve worked on are about escapism and our collective fascination and fear of the unknown. Although I prefer not to give too much information about the specific meaning of each piece, as I like to let the audience discern their own meaning.
3. Why do I write/create what I do? I enjoy making art and find collage an addictive practice. There is a creative challenge in using found imagery that appeals to me; it is, on the one hand, restrictive and limited by what materials you have access to, while on the other hand, there are no rules or expectations.
4. How does your writing/creating process work? I will often spend hours searching for and grouping the right images, ones that seem like they were always meant to have belonged together.
The process of putting a work together is totally different, less methodical and more instinctual. Some pieces come together quickly, organically, while others will take much longer and be shaped, layered and reduced over time, until there’s a sort of visible ‘click’ - that moment when everything seemingly falls into place.
** I will be announcing the artists I invited to participate tomorrow and they will post their answers to the same questions in a week.
